I had just finished a sign for some Waco business owners who are friends with Chip and Joanna. Not long after, they were eating dinner together when Joanna expressed the need to have a “go-to” metal art person for signs and cut outs, etc. Over the years, we’ve been involved in some really neat metal projects.

With our project management expertise, collaborative spirit, and seasoned design skills, we take an overwhelming project off your shoulders. There is a 3-5 day shipping time for most of the United States. Flecked and multicolored, this textured finish creates the illusion of an aged and textured copper. With dark shadows, this finish really makes a statement in any environment. I’ll have to revamp my thoughts or maybe even do another project. Every time I’ve ever been at this point, it feels as if it just comes to me.

Then, I wind up loving the project and being more excited than ones that flow and come to me instantly. Soon, Joanna and I were talking and designing together. Then it wasn’t long till the High Noon Entertainment trucks, vans and people were at our shop clipping microphones on me, and we were filming away. I was nervous as could be at first, then all of a sudden it came naturally and I did ok.

Its smooth and glossy characteristics add a sleek and modern look to any room. Flecked and textured, this smooth finish has beautiful deep hues of gold and dark shadows. This finish is classic and will weather well for outdoors or inside.

There may be additional charges for font changes or adjustments to the size of the design. Standard shipping is included on all orders delivered in the US. Expedited and international shipping are available on a case by case basis. Please note that expedited shipping does not change the turnaround time for the design production. If you'd like to expedite your shipping, please place the order then e-mail with your order number and ask for your expedited shipping options.

This richly tinted finish darkens slightly at the edges and catches the light in interesting ways across the visible metal grain. Over the years, we've been involved in some really neat metal projects. Our metal work ranges from family name wall badges to business signs and many ranch entrances. We've even got the chance to work on many projects for President Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush. I’ve also done work for the United States Secret Service and Texas Department of Public Safety. I am proud to be the exclusive metal artist for Four Sixes Ranch, John Wayne Enterprises, and PBR.

When he moved to west Texas in 2004, I stayed and worked really hard to make it on my own. Once a proposal and agreement have been signed, we start our project in earnest, collaborating with all team members, fellow professionals, and decision-makers. We lead the way while listening carefully to your vision for the project. Working in concert with contractors and subcontractors, we champion your vision.

They needed something that would speak to their core audience of designers and design agencies and be visually engaging enough for people to take notice. We created a gift set that was immediately eye-catching while highlighting several different print techniques offered by Glenmore. Each box contained three custom-designed candy-containing tubes alongside cheeky Valentine's Day cards and stickers that played up printing puns. Studio TK wanted to create its first-ever video by highlighting Christophe Pillet, designer of its newest table collection, Rec. As is standard across much of the contract furniture industry, designers work with many brands. Subsequently, a simple search can return multiple videos from competing manufacturers featuring the same designer, answering the same generic questions.

Otis College of Art and Design (OTIS) was established in 1918 by founder and publisher of the Los Angeles Times, General Harrison Gray Otis. The school serves approximately 1,100 full-time students enrolled in 11 BFA degree programs ranging from Graphic Design to Toy Design. The school also offers MFA degrees in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Public Practice, and Writing, as well as a variety of minors and certificate programs. “The three-year Program is designed for students who do not have a Graphic Design undergraduate degree, but who typically demonstrate a talent and enthusiasm for design, and a level of expertise in their given field. The heart of the Program is the Visual Literacy course, a critique class comprised of a series of structured projects designed to teach design principles, process, methodology and skills.” Students in both programs are required to pass a Thesis Review to obtain the MFA degree. Walt and Roy Disney formed California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in 1961 through the merger of two existing Los Angeles schools for art and music.

The heavy-duty, tactile feel of the book harkens back to the nostalgia of "glovebox" machinery manuals that bore battle scars from use. Beneath the cover exists a black-on-white inversion of the bold typographic design, bound by an exposed spine, which metaphorically represents the design process—revealing how the book is made. USAMore than 2,700 people in Seattle/King County live in their cars due to homelessness.

Students in all Graphic Design programs have the opportunity to complete an internship, study abroad, and access “valuable resources” consisting of over 1,000 reference books, magazines and paper/print samples of photography, illustration, typography, graphic design and advertising. The BFA provides “a comprehensive education in design principles, applications, theories, history, and practice,” says the school. The school serves 34,340 students enrolled in more than 300 degree programs across 12 colleges and 65 academic departments. The College of Design houses the Graphic Design program, which offers two degree paths—a Bachelor of Graphic Design and a Master of Graphic Design.

Yumi and the Nightmare Painter Interior art 17th Shard

design yumi and the nightmare painter

To this day, I’m not a hundred percent certain why. But this was close to where Virtuosity Splintered herself, and I suspect that had an effect. Kilahito was circular, and its perimeter held a final line of buildings, not quite a city wall. Outside of that was one last street, in a loop running around the city.

A Cosmere Novel

design yumi and the nightmare painter

Hikaru no Go is another childhood favorite of mine, and I knew this would bode well for me. And, of course, the other reason, Aliya Chen is the designated illustrator for this book. Aliya Chen is one of the best artists I have come across. You do not need to hear my words on how amazing she is at her art. Or, to put it more simply, read this book and witness her illustrations. Suffice it to say I had high expectations and excitement going into this book, and still, I was astounded.

thoughts on “Book Review: Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson”

The effort and reward of doing this are imbalanced. You can’t possibly expect readers to read 4000 pages (currently almost 2,000,000 words) long of books to have a small benefit in reading this 110,000 words long standalone novel. That would make Yumi and the Nightmare Painter as a standalone novel inaccessible to many readers, which I’m pretty sure is not Sanderson’s intention. You WILL benefit from reading other books in the Cosmere first, no doubt about that, especially The Stormlight Archive. From now on, I will actually recommend Yumi and the Nightmare Painter as one of the good starting points in Cosmere. Especially if that specific reader is looking for a standalone novel.

Liyun

Painter attempts to lead the nightmare away, giving Yumi an opportunity to double back and find her bell, but when she escapes Yumi freezes up. Tojin and Akane appear, having followed her earlier, and realize she has seen another nightmare. Yumi is reminded Painter must be in danger, and returns to her bag to find the bell is broken.

The story takes place on planet Komashi, a world enshrouded by a dark mist. The shroud regularly produces coherent nightmare creatures that can hurt or kill humans. Nikaro is a Painter, a group of people that use sumi-e painting to trap and disable the nightmares, thereby preventing them from hurting more people.

She finds that she can walk through the walls of buildings, confirming that everything is an illusion. Eventually she finds the machine in the bailiff's house, and the four scholars with it. They are caught by surprise as she bursts in and beats the machine with a stone until it fails, making a whining sound with a release of glowing white smoke. She thinks her mission is complete, but they ask what she thinks she is doing and Yumi realizes the true threat is the father machine they have mentioned before.

He would have been confused to hear that comparison, as he had never heard of such lands as those. In fact, his people had only recently begun to think about whether their planet was alone in the cosmere. The OverDrive Read format of this ebook has professional narration that plays while you read in your browser. I’ll be reading this book again with my book club, and I’m looking forward to discussing it with others. She’s kept in an emotional prison, unable to think or feel for herself.

Wherever you listen, the unmistakable voice of Stephen Fry is guaranteed to guide you ever more deeply into this magical story and transport you to the heart of the adventure. Filled with stacked stones that call forth miracles, raised by callused hands that tremble in their work, drained with each stone lifted, settled, lifted again. He sighed, glancing to where two other nightmare painters strolled the perimeter. Akane wore a bright green skirt and buttoned white blouse, and carried the long brush of a nightmare painter like a baton.

Rithmatists are humanity's only defense against the Wild Chalklings—merciless creatures that leave mangled corpses in their wake. Having nearly overrun the territory of Nebrask, the Wild Chalklings now threaten all of the American Isles. The star was particularly bright when the nightmare painter started his rounds. Brandon Sanderson’s third secret project is a secret no more! Yumi And The Nightmare Painter catapults us back into the Cosmere after the non-Cosmere Frugal Wizard stumble. Yumi is an excellent return to form, complete with an interesting magic system, intriguing characters, and a brilliant setting.

Painter insists that he doesn't think it's a good idea for Yumi to go looking for the stable nightmare, and is particularly adamant that she will not be skilled enough to stop it herself. After a knock on the door they receive a letter from the foreman notifying Nikaro that he has been put on one month of unpaid leave for neglecting his duties. Painter accepts that they must do something about the stable nightmare. He agrees to train Yumi well enough to defend herself from a regular nightmare, in an emergency, so that they can hunt for the stable nightmare and alert someone else.

Disoriented by the strange setting, particularly the bright sunlight filling the wagon, Painter assumes he must be dreaming and begins testing this theory as Yumi yells for her attendants. He soon decides that the experience is not a dream, and Yumi calms as she comes to the conclusion that the boy must be the spirit she spoke to. Nikaro then looks out through the window at her alien world, spots the daystar, and concludes he must have traveled to "the star" in his own world's sky. Chaeyung and Hwanji enter the wagon carrying breakfast, walking directly through the incorporeal Yumi. She quickly realizes he must have taken her body, and is horrified as Nikaro begins to break the rituals.

With a modern take on a classic cottage, this floor plan packs a punch. The hub of the L-shaped cottage is towards the rear with a great room and kitchen that open to the back deck. You can easily adapt the plan to your needs by rethinking the study off the primary suite or forgoing the fourth bedroom to expand the living room. This open-concept plan from architect John Tee, makes the most of its natural light-filled square footage and expansive rear covered porch. For added privacy, the primary bedroom is tucked to the left side of the living spaces, opposite of the other two bedrooms.

Some of them have a lot to offer but because their price is too expensive, there is not much value for the money. They measure 10’x11′, but one of them has a larger walk-in closet. This is also where you find the laundry, which is conveniently placed near the sleeping spaces.

The House Plan Company is here to make the search for more — easy for you. A zero-lot-line home is a home built to the very edges of the property line. You would construct a zero-lot-line home to gain as much indoor space aspossible on the house’s sides and preserve a larger backyard and outdoor seating area. For example, gyms do not have carpeted floors, buta bedroom converted into a home gym will likely have a carpeted floor. That’s why it’s important to makedesign decisions that offer the most flexibility. Installing a library is a personal preference, but it does provide a unique feature with a clear purpose.

Inside, you'll find a harmonious flow between spaces, while large windows invite natural light and scenic views to fill the interiors. The exterior of 1-story modern house plans often boasts a clean and streamlined façade that complements the modern aesthetic. These floor plans maximize their square footage while creating natural flow from room to room. One story house designs are always popular and ideal if you want to eliminate the potential hazards of stairs. Many plans in this unique group of home designs feature patios or lounges for outdoor living, allowing seamless access to fresh air and a breezier feel throughout.

The kitchen shows off a big island and opens to the dining area and the living room. Other highlights include the two-car garage/workshop, the wraparound porch, and the versatile den. Without being stingy when it comes to details, this skillfully designed, single-story cottage offers full-scale living. The generous primary suite wing provides plenty of privacy with the second and third bedrooms on the rear-entry side of the house.

Two other bedrooms are similar in style and they measure 11’4″x11′ each. A hallway separates them and it also grants access to a 7’6″x5′ shared bathroom. This house plan has an optional basement which can be included in the layout for an additional price. It will greatly increase the storage space, but you can also furnish it and extend the heated area.

Now that your nursery’s color palette is ready to go, I bet you’re itching to throw some of that color on the walls! In that same thought, however, it’s a good idea to add thematic elements in a way that you can easily change as your child grows. Instead of relying on thematic items like monkeys or mermaids, you’d rely on colors and patterns that evoke a vintage or cozy feeling.

Design a Beautiful and Safe Nursery With My Step-By-Step Guide

Get ready for lots of practical, actionable, and fun information to help you design the perfect nursery. I’m so glad you discovered this in-depth yet easily-digestible guide. I honestly think that this is the best (free) nursery design guide you’ll find online.

Designer Stephanie Hatten updated the Gatehouse Kitchen, turning it into an airy English-country-inspired space. An eye-catching natural stone by Walker Zanger was selected for the counters and backsplash, and the space was outfitted with the latest Monogram appliances. They just exude comfort and safety, which is exactly what you want in a nursery. Sets of wall art are quite popular these days, making it much easier for parents. You can even personalize it with your child’s name at some shops.

The Crib

“The beautiful thing about a nursery is the base pieces are always the same—crib, changing table, dresser and chair,” says Ryann Swan Hackett, principal designer and founder of Ryann Swan Design. “The layout can evolve and change as you learn more about how you function as a new parent.” Swan also recommends creating a space that you enjoy, too. “You might be overtired and up at 3 a.m., but being in a space that brings you comfort and joy can make such a difference in those moments,” she says.

Many parents forget about banners when they design their nurseries, but they’re a great way to add fun (and fill in blank space). They’re also great for tying things together… sometimes literally. Teepees are what started it all for me… they’re the reason I became a nursery designer. Now, we’re going to talk about making the most of that comfy crib by controlling natural light. Designers always love to maximize natural light, but when it comes to nurseries, you really need to be able to control it. No baby wants to take a nap with bright light pouring in through the window.

design a nursery

Consider what you like more than what you think the baby will like. In truth, the baby will not remember what their nursery looked like and will develop their own preferences with time. But you can also go with a more abstract theme that’s based on a concept or a feeling.

Pillows bring the same cozy feel that stuffed animals do, along with adding color, texture, and/or pattern to your design. We’ve talked quite a bit about ceilings and walls in the past few lessons. Smart storage solutions (and plenty of them) are a must for nursery design. Some of the stuff is necessary, other stuff is fun, but all stuff needs a place to live. You can decide on paint colors at almost any point in the design if you’re going to simply paint your walls.

Like jewelry in an outfit or candles on a cake, the best interior designs come down to details. In this lesson, I will give you some styling tips and a list of decor items that help give the room character and tie it all together. There’s actually a lot to cover when it comes to window treatments. So much so that I’ve written a complete guide on how to choose, measure for, and install window treatments. Before you decide which kind of window treatments you want, you’ll want to consider what kind of sleep training you want to implement.

Although wood has some shock absorbance, it won’t match carpet for this and will be more noisy. Rubber flooring is a practical and good looking option for babies’ rooms. It’s soft and comfortable and a really durable surface that’s easy to keep clean. Copper Pearl’s sheets are incredibly soft, yet durable enough to handle regular washings.

We’ve covered everything from rugs to curtains, furniture to storage, paint to wallpaper, and more! Now it’s time to bring it all together with impactful finishing touches. Day beds are designed in sofa style with a support along one side as well as a headboard and footboard so they’re a comfortable place to sit during the day as well as a sleep space. Once you have the basics down, it’s time to think about elements to complete your nursery. Lamps lend a cozy glow when you’re reading together before bed, while a mobile can help entertain your child.

The siding and stone slurry will materialize better with a light covering of the base color. Add some metal ceiling pops, faux-copper gutters, or other sceneries to give your home a remarkable flair. Take a glance at this beautiful Spanish-style home; it is a stunning example. As we all know, whether traditional or modern, the exteriors of Spanish-style residences are made from stucco. Here the stucco exterior is from Light Pewter by Benjamin Moore, and the trim and the windows are from Onyx by Benjamin Moore.

BLACK GUTTER IN WHITE HOUSE BLACK TRIM COMBINATION

Black window frames work reasonably well with light-colored or white walls, creating a good contrast. Use black windows to develop a stronger relationship with the outdoors and blend your indoor and outdoor spaces. Above is a stunning example of the modern white house with black trim perfect for those who love plenty of natural light.

Even if the home is not invented with adobe or clay, fiber concrete panels can create a similar look with a crisp white stucco-style texture. Did you realize that vertical siding, like board and batten, assists draw the eye upwards and gives the appearance that the home is taller than it is? White and black is a particular, organized color combination that empowers a clean look.

The perfectly placed, well-manicured landscaping provides major curb appeal. You can use either white rake boards, black rake boards, or both in your single-story white house black trim exterior designs. This combination of colors and black trims will give your home a finishing touch to your roofs. In this example, the white exterior is very authentic to the house’s architectural style. I love the painted brick that comes up just a quarter of the way. Other features that need to be mentioned are the chunky wooden accents and black light fixtures.

The black latex paint on the trims adds boldness that can be increased with the width of the trim. The idea of white house black trim can be applied by painting the gutters in the same shade of black for significant benefits. A white stone house can be combined with black trim to create a unique look. The light coating on stone can be highlighted with a black accent on windows and the metal roof.

From all the white houses with black trim ideas above, which one steals your attention? Black trim is not a new trend, and many architectural styles use it along with a variety of other darker shades. You can go with a modern white house with black trim or a black house with white trim; both ways, your exteriors will look spectacular. Here Arctic Whiteis used against the black trims to create a contrasting effect. The black window frames, pergola roofs, and house roofs are in dark tones with the classic white color. In order to add vibrance to the white structure, windows and garage doors can be painted with bold black.

That Hindley & Co. came up with this brilliant plan is beyond praise. This house in white featuring black trim is a beauty on two levels! The beautifully lit staircase takes visitors to the main door that leads to the middle of the house. The wood doors, tile roof and the lattice roof on the porch along with hanging pots, it gives the impression of a Mediterranean feel.

By opting for black trim against white exterior walls, you can create a contrast that adds depth to your modern or traditional home. On a traditional black and white exterior, the best idea is to combine the white wooden clapboard siding with black trim and a black roof. This palette design adds consistency, and thanks to the black trim, it makes the house look prominent. The addition of black roof shingles will further enhance the visual appeal.

The true simplicity and majestic view of the house increases our way towards it. Minimal use of wooden fence at the corner extremes the love for the house. Beautiful distinguishing features are enough for observers to live in this house. Moreover, the farmhouse chandelier illuminates the space with its rustic charm, increasing the mix of old elements and the latest comforts inside. The farmhouse’s large windows let in lots of natural light, further highlighting the glamour created by the chandelier.

Empty lots sell for between $100,000 and $200,000, while the few houses on the market are priced between $500,000 and $800,000. Black aluminum clad windows are even more expensive, by approximately 25% than a comparable wood sash. In a simple white home, this can be done by just painting the front door black. The outside space may be quickly accessed through the black glass windows. It’s the perfect choice for those who want a classic look with a modern twist.

90s house music

There are plenty of early ’90s tracks that mixed house and rave to great effect, but perhaps none more so than this impossibly energetic stomper. The manic piano stabs, rushing rhythm and commanding vocals provide a soundtrack for burning more calories than any exercise video ever did. From New Wave dance and Hi NRG to classic House music in the 90s, the genre’s influence has permeated every dance floor. This smashing 1999 release put iconic DJ and Producer Paul Johnson on the global radar. "Get Get Down" is one of those tracks that everyone has heard at least once.

‘Good Life’ – Inner City

And then the song fully emerges, the bass suddenly going like something stolen out from under Bernard Edwards’ fingertips, the hi-hat doing that bright, open chhh business on the offbeat. The up-from-underground stuff turns out to have been sort of poignantly appropriate. “Around the World” was an exhumation, disco as reworked in post-industrial Chicago and Detroit, then adapted anew by two blessed weirdos from Montmartre, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo.

Bonnie Pink – It’s Gonna Rain

In its stead came artists willing and insistent on changing the rules of the game in favor of something weirder, edgier, and rule-breaking. Female stars like Fiona Apple and Alanis Morissette proved that women not only had a seat at the rock table, they were sitting at the head. Elliott Smith appeared to be the second coming of Bob Dylan, infusing his folk-inspired 90s songs with tales of heartbreak and depression. Jimmy Eat World helped usher in emo music’s ascension within mainstream rock, and Pavement brought slacker cool to campuses across the country. Bands like Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers, though, continued to make sure that mainstream rock would continue to be a dominant force in the music industry into the 21st century.

One of the finest example of how dance music could do more than just borrow hooks and melodies from pop, ‘Where Love Lives’ went one step further. Britsh singer Alison Limerick’s rich vocal lines are layered over upfront house beats, creating the perfect crossover record, aimed right at the mainstream, but still retaining the dance music credentials of all involved. Though it originally dropped in 1990, it wasn’t until 1996 that a remix package finally sent ‘Where Love Lives’ into the dizzy heights of the UK top ten, where it really belonged. The same year, it also climbed into the upper echelons of the US club charts, where it also deserved to live.

Women continued to innovate, too, as acts like The Dixie Chicks and solo stars such as Lucinda Williams and Shania Twain began chiseling the genre in their image. This number from Chicago’s Lil’ Louis was one of the first house tracks to enjoy both considerable commercial success and heavy club airplay on its release. Even one listen to its infectious, unrelenting groove and orgasmic tempo shifts is enough to understand exactly why it got everyone so excited. Having your track remixed by every DJ and their dog doesn’t necessarily mean that the original is a classic. The bubbling, filtered blips are so beautifully weird when mixed in with a driving Chicago rhythm that it’s impossible to ignore it. If you’ve been to more than a handful of club nights, it’s almost guaranteed you’ll have heard a DJ drop this deviant dancefloor-filler.

“Little” Louie Vega and Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez are two of the most prolific producers in the history of house music. Together as Masters at Work, they helped define the funky, Latin-flavored sound of the New York club scene in particular and can still be found controlling the decks at top dance spots downtown. This 1993 album provides a vivid illustration of how hip-hop, house, and reggae once mingled on the streets of NYC, with an opening track that features Jamaican dancehall emcee Screechie Dan. The great producers of the 90s are known for successful singles that grew beyond the rave into mainstream radio culture. Below you can dig into some of the house tracks that made an impact in the 90s.

Rancid – Time Bomb

Back in 1987, it heralded the era of rave, it accelerated house, it sounded sublime then and still does now. "Missing" is a song by English popular music duo Everything but the Girl, taken from their eighth studio album Amplified Heart (1994). Released in August 1994 as the second single off the album it was an initial failure until their label Atlantic commissioned a remix by Todd Terry.

It’s been a DJ favourite ever since (for everyone from Ellen Allien to Julio Bashmore) thanks to its pulsing bleeps and plaintive vocal vibes. From 1994 until the turn of the millennium, Gemini, aka Spencer Kincy, was one of the most revered figures in the second wave of Chicago house. A decade ago, when a reporter tracked him down, he was homeless and apparently struggling with mental illness, even as a fresh crop of reissues, edits, and bootlegs was boosting his popularity among a new generation of clubbers and DJs. Read Pitchfork’s list of the best songs of the 1990s here and best albums of the 1990s here, and check out our full ’90s package here. African music continued to become a power player in the worldwide ecosystem in the 1990s, with superstars like Ali Farka Toure working with legendary American polymath Ry Cooder.

Background singer turned vocal queen Cece Peniston's bright and colorful “Finally” was a strong debut for the former gospel singer. Considered one of the top house tracks of all time, it showcases Peniston’s bold voice, a euphoric riff, and chorus quintessential of the disco influences in house music. Next time you go to a festival, count how many times you hear that iconic synth line break through the mix. Though genres like indie rock and grunge became mainstays during the 1990s, the behemoth that is pop music still dominated the charts and the cultural zeitgeist during the decade.

And despite its crossover success, Waters kept her day job for two years after the record hit the top of the charts. With that, the hook and perspective of the song were crafted, leading to the first socially aware classic house track to top the charts. Cajmere—aka Curtis A. Jones or Green Velvet— released this iconic track in 1992 during the second wave of Chicago House. Composed of a drum machine, Cajmere on the vocals, and a bed of silly synth sounds it paved the way for a free frame structure not common in house music. Just like its hip-hop sibling genre, R&B had a bounty of great songs during the 90s. The list of superstars emerging in the R&B lane are too many to name, but Aaliyah, Mariah Carey, and Mary J. Blige blended pop ballads with lush, R&B-inspired instrumentals, bringing a groundbreaking style to the genre.

First Floor saw the Chicago-born, Detroit-based producer re-writing all the rules with his unkempt and unfussy approach to deep, soulful house. Much like Moodymann, Parrish weaves a vibrant tapestry of gospel and soul sound bytes—though his stuttering loops, damaged samples, and general lack of respect for musical conventions set him apart from the rest of the pack. His famously adventurous DJ sets—which extend up to eight hours—touch on a broad range of genres across four or five decades, and have given him a reputation as one of the great record diggers of our time. Danny Tenaglia never enjoyed the pop success of contemporaries like Armand Van Helden or Deee-lite, but to this day he remains one of the seminal figures in New York house music. The prolific DJ and producer began his career in Brooklyn, DJing at roller discos in the late ’70s and early ’80s and later became a resident at legendary downtown dance spots like Twilo, Tunnel, and Vinyl. You can still catch Tenaglia playing all-night sets at spots like Output in Brooklyn or Space in Ibiza.

In recent years its joyous hooks have been sampled by modern house stalwarts Hercules and Love Affair and pop superstar Rihanna. Originally a riff on a proto-house classic, Isaac Hayes’s 1975 disco foray ‘I Can’t Turn Around’, this collaboration between turbo-lunged singer Darryl Pandy and Farley Keith blew the roof off house music at the time. It still has the distinction of being a true crossover hit that’s maintained its dancefloor appeal decades on.

Between 1994 and 1999, under the sequential series of aliases Round One through Round Five, they applied their spatial sensibilities and exacting production skills to deep house. You can hear their dubby signature in the chest-massaging sub-bass and glancing chords of “New Day,” but what makes the song so powerful is the guest vocal from UK session singer Andy Caine. From its 1980s roots in Black, Latinx, and queer communities in cities like Chicago, Detroit, and New York, electronic dance music exploded in the 1990s, taking techno, rave, jungle, and other permutations around the globe.

Unlike many of the genres in this list, these are songs that could have only been made in the 90s. First recorded by Jamie Principle (hailing from – you've guessed it – Chicago), the ‘Godfather of House’ Frankie Knuckles made the track famous with his slightly punchier version, still featuring Principle. It’s been covered and reworked by many different DJs and producers over the years, but Knuckles and Principle’s version is the one that has rightly gone down in dance music history. After evolving on the Chicago club scene in the early ‘80s, house music exploded at the end of the decade to become the world’s most exciting and innovative dance genre. By the early ’90s, massive pop stars like Madonna, Janet Jackson and Kylie Minogue were all incorporating elements of house music into their sound – a sure sign that it had infiltrated the mainstream. If you prefer your grooves rough around the edges, Theo Parrish's 1998 debut album is the one for you.
